Peter Stott is the owner and founder of Larch Cottage Nurseries. Larch Cottage supply a huge range of rare and unusual plants, from our base in Melkinthorpe or via our recommended plant mail order service.
On July 16th 2015 Peter received an Honorary Fellowship for his lifelong and outstanding contribution to Horticulture and Landscape Desigh within the Cumbrian Economy.
Raised in the beautiful Lowther valley, Peter Stott attended school in Penrith and gained A levels in Art, English and Geography.
After leaving school Peter studied at Carlisle College of Art and later, after a brief period working as a photographer in Ambleside and with the RSPB at Haweswater, went on to take a course in teacher training in Herefordshire.
As a subsidiary course he studied dance; was eventually accepted for a post at the London Contemporary Dance Company and at the same time started working in landscaping and garden design.
It was when Dutch Elm Disease arrived in Britain that Peter extended his horticultural services into tree surgery. In 1978 Peter moved back to Cumbria freelancing as a tree surgeon and garden designer.
The difficulties of sourcing the plants required for his landscaping designs led Peter to set up Larch Cottage Nurseries which is now recognised as one of the premier nurseries in the Country, and host to over 15,000 varieties of plants. Larch Cottage specialises in Rare and Unusual Shrubs, Perennials and climbers. Japanese Acers, Old Fashioned Roses and slow growing and Dwarf Conifers, all of which are available from the nursery in Melkinthorpe or via our plant mail order service.
For many of these varieties Larch Cottage are the country’s only supplier as listed in the RHS Bible, The Plantfinder. In the last few years Larch Cottage has Supplied Kew Gardens, Botanic Gardens Durham, RHS Wisley, plus many National Plant Collections as well as Sheffield botanical gardens, Worcester college, Myerscough college, Shipley college, Oatridge college, Gardening Which, University of Warwick and Alnwick gardens
Larch Cottage is an RHS Event Partner, and holds a number of talks and demonstrations throughout the year for RHS Members and has have recently joined the NGS Open Gardens scheme.
Peter continues to operate a very successful landscaping and garden design business as well as Larch Cottage Nurseries, Red Barn Gallery and The Greenhouse Restaurant.
In March 2012 The Independent Newspaper voted us one of the top 50 garden centres in the UK, describing us as a ‘A place of pilgrimage for plantaholics’

Our plant mail order service offers a next day delivery service where possible and we send out plants via mail order 10 months of the year – our plant mail orders have been sent out to countries including, America, Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Poland and Luxemburg
