Plant of the Month: Hamamelis - A vibrant splash of colour

Hamamelis are one of the most distinct and beautiful genus of shrubs of small trees. They can be used to add height to the back of borders. Their spider-like yellow or red flowers appear on the leafless branches from early Winter to Spring creating a vibrant splash of colour during the dull winter months, whilst their leaves offer spectacular Autumn colour.
As a general rule, the yellow varieties have the best scent. Hamamelis is generally pest- and disease-free, making it easy to grow. They require a well drained fertile soil that is acidic / neutral - not chalky! Preferring a shady spot out of direct sun, avoid exposed / cold areas. Plant in autumn - prune sparingly to shape.
